In 2003 I qualified to fish in American Bass Anglers Nationals Event on Kentucky
Lake. There was technique called strokin' a jig. This method uses 5/16 oz jig
with grub trailer. Finding the deeper structure such as points, mid-lake humps,
sharp breaks, or other deep water structure. You cast the jig out and allowed it
to sink to the bottom, once on the bottom, reel up two or three turns and a give
quick jerk upwards motion with the rod popping the jig a few feet off the bottom
and letting the jig fall to bottom again and repeat and be ready to set the hook
as the jig falls back down because most of the time the bite will come on the
fall. I brought this newly found knowledge back with me to try on my home
waters. The following season I modified my lure selection from a All Terrain ½
oz jig black/blue with a 5 inch Kalin’s black/blue grub trailer to the All
Terrain Mighty Jig 1/4oz w/black head and 5 inch Kalin’s hologram junebug grub.
You can work points by casting out to the deeper side and work up to the weed
edge or just the opposite. I found that a Shimano Compre 7’ medium heavy action,
with a fast tapering tip, and a Shimano Curado reel spool with Berkley 12# XL
line works very well. This technique has worked well for me on heavily pressured
lakes. Give it a try sometime. To find out more about
